Dr Kevin Petrie MA (RCA),
Research Lecturer in Ceramics and Glass,
The Institute for International Research in Glass,
University of Sunderland,
The National Glass Centre,
Liberty Way,
Sunderland,
UK.

Dr Kevin Petrie studied Illustration at the University of Westminster in London from 1990-93. During this time he developed an interest in the creative possibilities of the application of imagery to ceramic forms using screenprinted transfers. This led to an MA in Ceramics and Glass at the Royal College of Art in London. Here, Kevin further developed his work in ceramics and print and also developed a range of glass sculptures with printed elements enclosed within the glass.

Following the MA Kevin was awarded a bursary to study a practice based PhD, under Professor Paul van der Lem, at the Centre for Fine Print Research, University of the West England (UWE), Bristol. Kevin's PhD, "Water based ceramic transfer printing - The development and creative use a new on-glase screenprinting system", was completed in 1999 and was the first awarded by the Faculty of Art, Media, and Design, UWE. The research developed a new, patented, process to print ceramics that is healthier and easier to use for artists. The process is now launched on the market and is being used by artists world-wide.

In 1999 Kevin was appointed as a Research Lecturer in Ceramics and Glass at the School of Arts, Design, and Media, University of Sunderland. The Glass and Ceramics department is now based in one of the largest and best-equipped facilities in Europe at the National Glass Centre in Sunderland. Here Kevin works with undergraduate and postgraduate students. He is currently supervising three practice based research students in Glass and Ceramics. He also works on research development and external funding applications.

Kevin has written on his subject for a range of journals and continues to exhibit artwork in a variety of media including, ceramics, glass, drawing, and enamels.
